Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis is a condition that usually develops in elderly patients. It is caused by iron build up inside the synovial lining of the joint, most often the knee joint, which causes pain and swelling. Localized pigmented villonodular synovitis occurs in one area of the joint and pain is usually easily managed. Diffused pigmented villonodular synovitis affects the whole joint, causing more severe and persistent pain. The swelling will affect the bone alignment in the area and limit joint mobility. There is no known cause of pigmented villonodular synovitis.
- Catching of the knee joint upon moving
- Pain that comes and goes

Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis is a reoccurring condition. Physical therapy can help manage pain and symptoms, especially if you are not a good candidate for surgery. Your All Sports physical therapy routine will usually begin with massage or ultrasound to reduce swelling and increase range of motion. Your therapist will then instruct you in exercises that will strengthen the knee and hip muscles. This will stabilize and improve joint alignment, preventing further inflammation and pain.
