Total hip replacements (THR) are done to relieve pain and return mobility to those with severe arthritis or fractures in the hip so they may resume daily life functions comfortably. After total hip replacement, you will feel stiffness, pain, and weakness in the hips and lower extremities. It is often hard to put weight on the operated hip, making it difficult for you to walk.

Your physical therapist will begin to help post-operative patients on the first or second day following surgery. In the hospital, your physical therapist will first help you do simple, everyday activities, like sitting up or rolling over in bed, with minimal stress on the hip joint. You will also be encouraged to walk with the help of a walker or cane. An outpatient physical therapy regimen will begin around 4-6 weeks after surgery. You will be instructed in a range of motion and strengthening exercises, observing surgical precautions if still indicated for the hip. The goal of outpatient physical therapy will be to get you back to doing everyday functional activities and eventually to an independent exercise/ gym routine without pain.
